History

Chavín de Huántar is a ceremonial and cultural center dating from approximately 1200 B.C. until 500 BC, being one of the oldest civilizations in America. The Chavín culture is characterized by its lithic art, ceramics, metallurgy and textiles, and is considered one of the first complex societies in the Andean region. This archaeological site was the place of convergence for various communities, where rituals, ceremonies, and political events took place.

Location

Chavín de Huántar is located in the province of Huari, in the region of Ancash, Peru. It is located in the basin of the Mosna River, at the point where it joins the Wacheksa River. Its strategic location allowed this civilization to take advantage of the commercial routes between the coast and the mountains, which favored its economic and cultural development.

How to get

To get to Chavín de Huántar from Lima, the capital of Peru, you can take a flight to the city of Huaraz, which takes about an hour. From Huaraz, you can take buses or colectivos to the town of Chavín de Huántar, located about 109 kilometers to the east. The journey by car lasts approximately 3 hours and offers spectacular landscapes of the Andean mountains.

Actual state

Chavín de Huántar continues to be a center for archaeological research and conservation of cultural heritage. Over the years, various excavations and restorations have been carried out on the site, revealing its enigmatic constructions, such as the Old Temple and the New Temple, as well as the famous "Lanzón de Chavín", an impressive lithic sculpture of 4.5 meters high.
