Neuschwanstein Castle

(Schloss Neuschwanstein)

Neuschwanstein Castle is located above Hohenschwangau near Füssen in the southeastern Bavarian Allgäu. The building was built from 1869 for the Bavarian King Ludwig II as an idealized idea of a knight's castle from the Middle Ages. The designs come from Christian Jank, the execution was carried out by Eduard Riedel and Georg von Dollmann. The king lived only a few months in the castle, he died before the complex was completed. Neuschwanstein was originally called the New Hohenschwangau Castle, and it has had its current name since 1886. The castle is owned by the Free State of Bavaria; it is looked after and managed by the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes. Neuschwanstein is the most famous of the castles of Ludwig II and one of the most famous sights in Germany. It is visited by around 1.5 million tourists annually. Often referred to as the “fairytale castle”, Neuschwanstein is open to visitors almost all year round . The architecture and interior are shaped by the romantic eclecticism of the 19th century; the castle is considered a major work of historicism. The aim is to add the “Ludwig castles” Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee to the UNESCO World Heritage List .
